Grassy Creek Free Will Baptist Church History

NEHEMIAH 4:6 For the people had a mind to work.

People came from all over East Tennessee to Grassy Creek Free Will Baptist Church for the Northern Quarterly Meeting, and estimated 500 of them, to attend this important annual event.  The small clapboard church building could seat no more than one third of them.  Yet they came anyway, suffering the deprivations and hardship of travel, the absence of public accommodations and the lack of creature comforts, which meant nothing to them in their quest for Christian fellowship.  Annual meetings lasted several days as the attendees stayed in Christian homes, sometimes sleeping in barns or other out buildings for rest.  Divine worship manifested by Holy Ghost power and life changing sermons demonstrated by the same was the object of their quest.  It is no wonder that people were saved in almost every service in those days.  It can be attributed to the depth of the devotion of the ordinary believers who lived and longed for God’s blessing to be on them every day.

The hills and hollows were filled with spirit filled saints of God who, in this life, looked to be lacking, but were abundantly rich in power from on High.  They knew who they believed in was able to do what He said He would.

Today Grassy Creek Free Will Baptist Church is still alive and well.  And you can see the descendents of those saints that stood on that church hillside in the pews at Grassy Creek church.  One of those descendents is now the pastor and has been for 26 years, Reverend Teddy Webb.

Since those days in the late 1800’s, God has richly blessed us and has given us a beautiful sanctuary.  We can stand on the porch of our new church and still see that old clapboard building where this legacy started.  First it was the new building, then in 1980 the cement was poured to add on bathrooms and classrooms.  In 1984 the fellowship hall was built.  In 1995, after a lot of hard work, money raised, and prayers, the parking lot was paved.  And in September of 1998, construction started on our new church building and our first service in our new church was Easter Sunday 1999.

So many people were coming to the Lord that we needed more room to hold everyone.  There has been a lot of prayer, most important, and work from all the people in our congregation.  We have done many fundraisers to help pay on our new church that have helped tremendously.  We have had yard sales, bake sales, spaghetti suppers, just to name a few ideas that people have had over the years.

In the last ten years, we started making peanut butter candy and selling it to help pay on our church.  In the beginning, we started making this candy once every year during Easter.  People loved it!!!  We made about 500 to 1,000 pieces in the first couple of years and this idea has grown into our greatest fundraiser for our church.  We make it TWICE a year now!!!  We make this candy through the Christmas Season and Easter now.  We make 4,000 to 5,000 pieces each time and we sell it through out our region.  We are extending our outreach to those who would like to be a part of this great work that He is allowing us to do.  We did not dig the foundation, nor did we lay bricks but this is something that we can do……Nehemiah 4:6 For the people had a mind to work!!!!
